A spokeswoman for Donald Trump slammed George H.W. Bush on Tuesday, following a report that the former president will vote for Hillary Clinton over the controversial GOP nominee.
"If it is true that some of the Bushes are going to be supporting Hillary Clinton, then I think it really offers vindication for a lot of the tea party goers who felt like Republicans were starting to govern as Democrats," Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson said on Fox News's "The Kelly File."
"The establishment is going to stick with the establishment," she continued.
Pierson remarked on a situation where "you have Republicans in a record number turn out for Donald Trump and you have former leaders of the party just essentially slap them in the face."
"Everyone is going to have to choose who best suits their values, and if Hillary Clinton represents George Bush's values then that's his prerogative," Pierson said.
Others in Trump's campaign offered more tempered responses Tuesday to news that Bush, 92, would be voting for Clinton over the GOP nominee, a remarkable development in a year where a number of former GOP administration officials have signaled they'll back the Democratic nominee.
Trump's campaign manager Kellyanne Conway told CNN that "Americans are very grateful to the Bush family for their public service" but dismissed the news of the elder Bush supporting Clinton while jabbing at what she called "a lot of hurt feelings" following Jeb Bush's failed GOP presidential bid.
Trump's running mate Mike Pence similarly told Fox he holds George H.W. Bush "in the highest regard" but "respectfully and strongly disagree[s]" with his decision to vote for Clinton.
Robert F. Kennedy's daughter Kathleen Kennedy Townsend posted a picture on Facebook Monday of herself with Bush at an event and said the former president told her he is voting for Clinton in November.
